Joshua Hunt is the founder and director of Narrative Landscape, bringing over 14 years of specialised experience in landscape architecture and assessment within New Zealand's statutory context. A Registered Member of the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA), Joshua holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Honours) from Lincoln University, completed in 2010. He has previously served four years as the Chairperson of the Hawkes Bay Manawatū Branch of the NZILA, and is currently on the organising committee for the 2025 NZILA Conference.
Joshua’s diverse portfolio spans a range of projects, including:
Retirement villages and subdivisions
Renewable energy infrastructure (solar and wind farms)
Regional park developments
District-wide landscape and coastal character assessments
Peer Review reports to assist Councils in processing consent applications
With a particular interest in the management of Outstanding Natural Landscapes (ONLs), Joshua has contributed to five district-wide landscape assessments throughout the North Island. This work has involved identifying outstanding and amenity landscapes, as well as writing two district-wide coastal natural character assessments.
Joshua is experienced in preparing visual simulations for consent applications and hearings, often incorporating innovative technical solutions to support his assessments. His keen interest in blending innovation with rigorous statutory frameworks ensures high-quality outcomes for both private developers and Council clients.
Registered NZILA Landscape Architect for over a decade, with extensive experience in landscape planning projects and assessments undertaken throughout New Zealand.
Strong expertise in the Te Tangi a Te Manu Landscape Assessment Methodology, with a focus on Landscape and Natural Character Assessment under RMA s6(a) and (b), and the NZCPS Policy 13 & 15. Skilled in transferring knowledge and concepts to diverse project contexts.
Proven ability in verbal, written, and graphic communication, ensuring clarity and precision in presenting complex assessments and design solutions.
Proficiency in professional software tools, including;
QGIS for spatial analysis
Vectorworks (CAD) for mapping and design
Adobe Creative Cloud for graphic design and presentation
Microsoft Office for documentation and collaboration
Twinmotion for photorealistic visualisations
Demonstrated ability to deliver practical and innovative solutions, balancing project requirements with creative approaches where appropriate.
Extensive experience in collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, while also capable of producing high-quality outputs independently.

After 26 consecutive seasons playing Hockey, it is time to have a break from competitive sport and instead take advantage of the stunning Hawke's Bay weekends with his wife, Wendy, and their three young children.
